About

Artist Julian Friers is back at Yarn for a two-part still life course exploring the fundamental aspects of still life painting.

  • Session One: Friday 24th October 7 pm-9.30 pm

  • Session Two: Saturday 25th October 12 pm-5 pm

This two-part course is designed to guide you through the process of still life painting. Suitable for all levels, whether you're new to painting or looking to deepen your technique.

Session One (Friday evening) is all about preparation. Julian will demonstrate how to build a still life composition from scratch, discussing form, light and structure. You’ll observe, take notes and begin developing a reference image to work from.

Session Two (Saturday afternoon) is your chance to paint. With one-to-one guidance from Julian, you’ll use your reference image to create a finished still life painting to take home. All painting materials will be provided.

Bring a sketchbook, notebook or iPad for notes during the first session.

Tea, coffee and snacks included.

About Julian Friers

ree

Julian Friers is one of Northern Ireland’s most respected wildlife and landscape painters. His work often explores themes of natural history, wildlife and Ireland’s lost biodiversity. In 2017, he completed a series of 20 large-scale paintings depicting animals both extinct and extant - a collaboration with palaeontologist Dr. Mike Simms. This series was acquired by the National Museums of Northern Ireland in 2019.

Julian’s paintings have been exhibited across the UK, Europe and the US, notably at the Society of Wildlife Artists in London, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, and Ulster Museum’s Wild Ireland: Past, Present and Future exhibition.
